STRENGTHS:
HER WILL kendra isn't a particularly confrontational person, but by no means will she let you walk all over her
DEVOTION TO HORSES you can't come ride on day? kendra's the first to volunteer. need a leg cold hosed? she'll stand there as long as you need. a horse colicked? kendra has walked a horse for seven and a half hours. [/ul]
WEAKNESSES:
LOOSE REINS it may not seem like a very important weakness to most, but with riding being top priority in kendra’s life, it’s a big deal. she tends to let her reins slip through her hands while she rides, not a lot but enough to hinder things just a bit so she has trouble with things
HER PUNCTUALITY meaning she doesnt have any, she’s always a few minutes late to classes, scheduled appointments are a joke, and she usually arrives at family functions at least a half hour late. she however, can get her act together for her lessons, and some times when she’s meeting up with friends.[/ul]
PERSONALITY:
First things first, Kendra is a barn rat to the core. The first time she ever saw a horse was when her aunt was babysitting a then four year old Kendra and brought the little girl to one of Emma’s riding lessons. Kendra was hooked after that and her love affair with horses began. Kendra had to wait until she was six to start lessons, a stable rule, and nothing else has mattered as much to ehr. She spends every hour she can in the barn. Riding, grooming, sweeping the aisle, helping bring horses in and out, and when she grew and was big enough to hold a pitchfork and push the wheelbarrow she helped with stalls.
When it comes to everything except horses, Procrastination is Kendra’s first name. Not her middle, her first. Homework and studying is frequently pushed aside for another hour or two at the barn. She’s very good at convincing herself that she’ll have time to do it later, or that she’ll skip a day at the barn and catch up on everything. It just about never happens. Then exams come around and she has a mental breakdown trying to learn the material and cramming as much information into her skull as she can. Sometimes she can pull it off, but most of Kendra’s grades are just high enough to enable her to still ride on the team.
Kendra is nice enough, but she’s not a goody-two-shoes who is friends with everyone and smiles all the time. She can be on the snarky side at times, but unless you say something stupid, Kendra is generally good natured about things. She’s got her group of friends, mostly barn people, with a few others thrown in, and that’s the way she likes it. A social butterfly Kendra is not, but she’ll nod and smile at someone when needed. Kendra’s not one to go looking for trouble but in high school, she was friends with the girls who practically lived for the drama so she’s been involved in the catty bullshit that girls can get themselves into and has learned how to stay out of the fire. She can step up and take care of herself when needed, but really, when shit goes down, she prefers to sit on the sidelines with the bowl of popcorn.
Kendra isn’t very fond of her family and feels like an outsider when she’s with them. She’s not brilliant. Her father has never given her anything that she didn’t have to work her ass off for, and even then he’s reluctant. The only reason Kendra has a horse of her own is because of her grandparents. They are the only two people Kendra is 100% sure have her back and will support her no matter what. Kendra is terrified she will be a disappointment to them, so she pretends everything is going fine when sometimes Kendra feels like the ground is going to crumble underneath her, especially in regards to school. She feels like riding is the only real talent she’s got and she values that immensely.
When Kendra’s upset or pissed off about something, she can get very snippy and moody and it’s usually best to just leave her alone to stew. But even though she knows she should go and cool off, Kendra seems to seek out company when she’s in a funk. She has a tendency to vent and will talk herself in circles unless you stop her. When she gets in a mood, Kendra is very fidgety and gets stir crazy. She’s not quick to anger, but she does have a lot of steam to let off once she gets there. When she rants, she’ll pace and wear holes in the floor. She also can get very extravagant with her hands and motions. Her grandfather has been known to start laughing when Kendra goes of on a tangent because she’s waving around so much, which causes Kendra to laugh and she’s back to normal again. When she needs to think and really get some alone time in, her usual way to relax is to take one of the horses and hand walk somewhere around the barn; either in the arena or if the weather is good out on the trails.

TWO, TWELVE, NINETY-NINE
AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT
AT THE STROKE OF MIDNIGHT
FATHER: Leroy Anthony Beckett VI, fifty years old.
SIBLINGS: None
OTHER IMPORTANT PEOPLE: Emmelina Claire Sullivan, cousin, 22, cousin. Leroy James Beckett V, 79, grandfather. Emmelina Vincenza Beckett (neé Colicchio), 74, grandmother.
ORIGIN: Blackwood, New Jersey, USA
HISTORY: Born in the icy month of January, Kendra is the only child of Jenna Cooper and Leroy Beckett VI. The Becketts are an old family, with old money. Leroy and Jenna first met each other because their families ran in the same circles. Their marriage wasn’t exactly one of love, but the two did care for each other greatly. When they married, Leroy was twenty-eight years old, Jenna was twenty-two. Life went well for a couple of years. Leroy was working at Beckett College, part of the business end of things. Jenna graduated from college and became a homemaker, ie she was a socialite wife. Things began to go downhill between them and after three years of marriage, Jenna became pregnant and nine months later gave birth to a little girl. Being the youngest grandchild, as a little girl, Kendra was doted on by her family, especially her grandparents on her fathers side. With the arrival of their daughter, things between Leroy and Jenna started to get better and life went on.
The first time Kendra saw a horse, she was four years old and her Aunt Giada had brought her to the stable to watch one of her cousin Emma’s riding lessons. Kendra was hooked and after that Giada would bring Kendra to some of Emma’s lessons when she could. The Beckett girl was too young to ride, but she was just old enough to pet the soft noses and hold the brush with her tony hands and run it along a horse’s coat when someone would pick her up. For her sixth birthday, Kenda received riding lessons as a gift and she was finally able to do the thing she had been dying to do. Her first time on the pony, Kendra had the biggest grin on her face, her grandfather was sure it was going to stay there permanently. For the next year, life was good and Kendra was a very happy little girl. She went to a private elementary school, she had friends, she did well in her classes, and she had riding.
Things went downhill fast though, when it came out that Jenna had been having an affair. Kendra was eight years old when her mother packed up her things. She didn’t understand why her mother had left and continually asked her father when mommy was coming back. Leroy became angry and withdrawn and threw himself into his work. Kendra had just lost one parent; she didn’t understand why her father was so distant, and so she threw herself into riding and stayed at the barn for as many hours as she could. If she wasn’t at the stable, she was at her grandparents home.
Her grandfather, who goes by James so things don’t get out of hand when referring to people, saw his son going down a dark road but there was not much he could do. So he and his wife stepped in and were in Kendra’s life as much as they could. They were aging and could only do so much. James was the one to pick her up and bring her to and from the barn; the one who watched her lessons and brought her to horse shows. Her grandmother, Emmelina, made sure she ate relatively healthy and helped with schoolwork and things like that. One big thing that Emmelina did that has stuck with Kendra was she introduced her to old movies. Every chance they got, the two Beckett women would watch the classics, either ones that were showing on the television or movies that they had themselves. My Man Godfrey, the Thin Man movies, Casablanca, the list goes on. But Kendra’s favorite is It Happened One Night starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Call her weird, but Kendra will watch this movie whenever she can and it she’s wasting time she’ll put the film on for background noise.
It’s every serious rider’s dream to have a horse of their own and Kendra was no exception. She tried asking her father to buy her a horse multiple times, but every time the subject was broached the girl was brushed off. When she was twelve, Kendra made a serious plea to her father for a horse. It didn’t go well. Anthony Beckett was absolute in his belief that Kendra should work her butt off for the things she wanted, and at the time, he didn’t believe she deserved a horse of her own. His main argument that her grades were not up to par. Kendra’s marks were not terrible, but her father wanted better. His plan backfired and instead of inspiring her to do better, it discouraged her. With her grandmothers help, Kendra had been working hard in school (keep in mind that ‘hard’ to a twelve year old is very different from ‘hard’ to an adult) and she believed that if this was the best she could do working hard now, there was no way for her to bring her grades up.
James Beckett was not one to interfere greatly in his children’s lives, but in this instance, her shoved his way in. Maybe it was favoritism towards Kendra, but the way James saw things, Emma and Anythony had a pair of parents who loved them and would bend over backwards for them. Kendra had no one in her corner and James decided he was going to be the one in her corner. The conversation between James and Leroy was much more colorful, but essentially, James told his son to find a horse for Kendra or he would be taken out of the will and not receive any of his inheritance. Old fashioned, but a powerful tool. The Becketts had a large sum of money attached to their name, and Anthony Beckett was not a shallow person, but he understood that that money would make life much nicer and easier. So he hired Robert Carson to find his daughter a horse.
Kendra was beside herself, and yes, there was girlish high pitched squealing involved. Kendra switched stables and began taking lessons with Rob. The instructor started looking around at horses for sale, and after a few weeks had found something. She was an older mare, fourteen, and had experience in the equitation and hunter rings; a mount that could teach Kendra and be a good first horse. A few other prospects popped up, but they kept going back to the mare and she was bought for Kendra. The first few weeks were rocky, but what did you expect from a brand new horse and rider pair? But things continued to stay ugly and the two just didn’t mesh.
The search started again and this time, they took their time and moved slowly. A few months into the second search, four horses came into the barn on trial. Two were for Kendra, a smaller grey Hanoverian gelding and a big chestnut Thoroughbred, and the others two were for another customer of Rob’s, a nearly black Wesphalian gelding and a bay Holsteiner. Of course, the horse that Kendra fell in love with was the Wesphalian meant for someone else. Luck was on Kendra’s side this time and the other woman chose the Holsteiner, allowing Kendra to have the gelding.
There was no scary transition into high school, no worries about making friends, or any of the other worries that teenagers have when they are freshman. The up side to going to a private school, Kendra still had her friends from when she was a little girl. Odd, but true. A few new kids transferred in, but mostly everyone knew each other. Mostly, high school was ok. Grades were decent. Friends were like family. And riding was amazing. It took a couple of years, but Kendra and Jericho gradually developed a good bond and the two of them did well in the show ring.
After she graduated, it was a given that Kendra would go to Beckett College so she didn’t apply to anywhere else. That was a year ago, and Kendra has started a gradual downward slide. In her world, homework is optional. She goes to classes but barely does any work and it’s becoming a problem.
