BECKETT COLLEGE

Board Threads Posts Last Post
No New Posts The Quad

The large, grassy Quad is located right in the middle of Beckett College. It is airy and open, and its neat paths connect five of the main academic buildings. Dotted with trees, shrubs, and benches, it is both a fun place for a game of Frisbee and a peaceful place to study or relax between classes.

No New Posts The Beckett Student Center

The Beckett Student Center, often referred to simply as “the BSC” or “the Center,” is a great place to meet with friends or just spend some spare time. The food options on the first floor are endless: Panda Express, Wendy's, Rubio's, Round Table, Subway, and plenty of vending machines if you're looking for a junky snack. There is also a games room with two pool tables, tons of arcade games, a TV hooked up to a projector screen, and a separate TV lounge with a 62” LCD TV that can be reserved for games or other special television events. The second floor is home to a few conference rooms, which can be used for club meetings or functions; an information desk for visitors; and the cashier's and registrar's offices. There are sofas, chairs, and tables throughout where you can eat, chat with friends, or just surf the web.

No New Posts The R. J. Hadley Memorial Library

A three story architectural masterpiece made possible by a generous donation from the Hadley family, the school library has as much form as it does function. The library's vast selection of books is kept on the second and third floor, and eight research librarians are on staff to assist you in finding the right sources for any assignment, for any course. Comfortable, noiseproof study rooms are scattered around the second floor, and a Writing Help Center and Math and Science Help (MASH) are located towards the back of the third floor. The first floor houses a few classrooms, a lab with fifty computers running Windows, a lab with fifty computers running Mac, and a Peet's Coffee and Tea.

No New Posts Classrooms

Classes are held in any of Beckett's twelve academic buildings. Classrooms are generally small as class sizes are modest. All rooms are equipped with two large whiteboards, a computer that connects wirelessly to a top quality Epson projector and sound system, and an ELMO document camera and projector. This board serves as any classroom in any building except the library.

No New Posts The Morell Athletic Complex

What was once the drab Beckett Athletic Complex was totally redone and refreshed in 2005 thanks to a generous donation on the part of Calvin Morell, a Beckett alumnus, and renamed in his honor. The Athletic Complex, often called The Mac, includes: a large court used for both volleyball and basketball; a 144x60 meter field used for soccer, rugby, and lacrosse; an ice rink; an indoor track; a heated indoor pool; and a "mini gym" with free weights, forty weight machines, twenty five treadmills, and twenty five ellipticals. All students are welcome to use these facilities whenever they are not in use by an athletic team.

No New Posts Hines Hall

Serving as the girls' dormitory, Hines Hall is a six story building just a few yards away from the main campus. Most rooms are doubles or triples, but there are two quads and one suite on each floor. There is a central lounge on each floor, and all contain vending machines, a 36" LCD television with full cable, comfortable chairs and sofas, and an air hockey table. Hines Hall also contains a laundry room and 24 hour computer lab, both located on the first floor. Students must swipe their student ID cards both to enter the dorm building and to access each floor. Guys are not allowed in the girls' dorms after 1 am.

Parkman Hall is the five floor boys' dormitory, located just across the road from its slightly smaller counterpart Hines Hall. Both dorms have equal capacity, but Hines is taller while Parkman is wider. Most rooms are doubles or triples, but there are two quads and one suite on each floor. There is a central lounge on each floor, and all contain vending machines, a 36" LCD television with full cable, comfortable chairs and sofas, and an air hockey table. No New Posts The Stallion Barn

The Stallion Barn has ten 14'x20' box stalls and ten 14'x28' in and out stalls, all with automatic waterers, rubber mats, and high quality shavings. Equipped with three roomy crossties and two wash stalls, this barn is just as nice and neat as the Main Barn, just smaller. There is one midsize tack room that leads into a small feed room used for storing the stallions' grain and supplements.

No New Posts Tack Room & Lounge

Located in the barn next to the office is the tack room and lounge. The large room has a rack and hook for every saddle and bridle as well as multiple comfy couches and chairs for students and boarders to lounge on. A large picture window gives people the opportunity to watch riders in the indoor arena. There is a fully stocked refrigerator and freezer, a sink, microwave, and counter space for all your food related needs. There is also a large washer and dryer for all your horse laundry.

No New Posts The Indoor Arena

The pride and joy of Blackwood Equestrian Center, the Indoor Arena is the envy of every barn for miles. Measuring 180'x200', the arena is large and well-ventilated. The arena roof is noiseproofed and fully insulated for comfort in all climates. Thirty-two hanging lights equipped with florescent bulbs both provide lighting at night and keep electricity costs at a minimum. Footing is three inches of brown Equi-Tread crumb rubber over a well-packed limestone-over-clay base for superior concussion absorption with no lack of support.

No New Posts The Outdoor Arena

Measuring a grand 220'x220', the Outdoor Arena never feels crowded even with ten horses working. A course of show-quality jumps is almost always set up, but there is ample room for working on the flat. Four post-mounted lights make night riding possible. The footing is three inches of Equi-tread crumb rubber in a mixture of red and black, the Beckett school colors, over a compacted clay base and provides just the right amount of cushion and resistance. Always neatly raked and fringed with shrubs and small trees, the Outdoor is a beautiful as it is functional.

No New Posts The Dressage Ring

Located just a few feet across from the Indoor, the Dressage ring is a spacious 66'x198' (20x60 meters), big enough for multiple horses to work together comfortably. Footing is soft Chaney sand kept at a perfect moisture level by frequent light waterings and just the perfect depth to provide protection but not strain horses' tendons.

No New Posts The Pastures

The Blackwood Equestrian Center pastures are some of the lushest and greenest expanses of grass any horse could ask to run free in. The BEC pastures are as follows: three two acre pastures for groups of up to six horses; two half acre pastures for pairs of horses; and two quarter acre pastures for horses that require solitary turnout. Horses are turned out three times a week for five hours and allowed to run, socialize, and eat their fill. Maintenance is mostly taken care of by hungry horses but the pastures are mowed once a month.

No New Posts The Trails

Extending for 20 miles total, the Blackwood Equestrian Center trails are long and gently winding, studded with tall trees and colorful wildflowers. One path leads to and then follows a stream for about five miles, another winds over a few gentle hills and down into a small valley, and another ends at a large pond where riders and their horses often go swimming in warmer weather. One path referred to as "The Course" includes twenty cross-country obstacles that can easily be ridden around if riders prefer not to jump them. When going on trail, all riders MUST: inform at least one staff member of when they are leaving and what trail they are taking; leave a note on the whiteboard to be erased when they return; and most importantly, ALWAYS RIDE WITH AT LEAST ONE OTHER PERSON.

No New Posts Mike's Grill and Pub

Mike's is a popular place for college students to go on a date, watch the game with some friends, or just grab some really good food. The fare is your basic grill-type food, ranging from huge burgers and hearty sandwiches served with amazing steak fries, to salads and Sam Adams-battered fish and chips. Every item on the menu from appetizers to desserts is delicious. The ambience is comfortable and inviting, with all kinds of interesting photos, paintings, signs, and other such interesting pieces of décor covering the walls, and there are three bigscreen TV's that are always playing some kind of sporting event. It has a full bar with a wide range of domestic and imported beer, but is still kid friendly and mom approved.

No New Posts Blackwood Plaza

The only mall in this rather small town, the Blackwood Plaza houses just about every store and food outlet you would expect to find in a mall. From Aunt Annie's Pretzels to Bath and Body Works, the Plaza has it all.

No New Posts The Basement

While Blackwood is certainly no New York or Los Angeles when it comes to nightlife, it does have a small main drag with a few trendy shops, a couple of cafes, and, of course, The Basement. While from the outside it doesn't look like much, it's one of the coolest clubs within an hour's drive and people from bigger cities often venture into Blackwood to dance and drink here. When you first enter the club you must walk down a dim stairwell to get to the dancefloor and bar. Halfway down, the stairwell opens up onto the club and begins to spiral towards the edge of a dancefloor large enough for a couple hundred people to dance at a time. To the left of the floor is a full bar and to the right the DJ's stage area. While most nights the club spins a variety of music, Thursday nights are devoted to Rap/Hip Hop, Fridays to House/Electronic, and Saturday is DJ's Choice, where he plays his own mixes.

No New Posts Ellington Park

Named for the street it's located on, Ellington Park is a lovely, peaceful place for a day with the kids or a walk with the dog. Spanning a good half of the block, the park includes a large sandbox with a huge play structure, a picnic area that can be used for parties or any other get-togethers, a small rose garden, and jogging path along the perimeter of the park.

No New Posts Residential

Blackwood isn't a very big town, so the suburban residential area is just a few minutes away from the Beckett campus. This makes it easy for many students to go home for the weekend (or even just for the night if they want some of Mom's cooking) or simply commute to school. The area is neat and well kept; it looks like a neighborhood right out of a movie.
